THIRSTY THURSDAY!!!! LOL!

So the title of today's post makes me sound a bit like a lush, but oh' well.....I really am thirsty.

lol. So the question that I have for my fellow Paleo-ers is what the hell can we drink other than water and tea or coffee without crap in it? I realize it is very important to get our daily intake of H2O, but I need a little excitement in my beverage. I heard Derek talking about soaking strawberries in water and coming up with some yummy goodness, but does anyone else have any other ideas? We focus really hard on food recipes and keeping it interesting, so let's be well rounded and keep our beverages interesting as well:)

Also, (I know I am all over the place) what about alcohol? I have been getting mixed advice on this. Are certain alcohols okay to consume in the occasional shot or is it really nothing at all? Can we drink Coconut and Almond milk? Any smoothie recipes not involving milk or yogurt? I need answers people! lol.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday! 2 more days until epic foolishness at the Halloween party! Stay strong my friends until then:)

  2. All I pretty much drink is hot tea, water and coffee....pretty boring but it doesn't bother me. Sometimes I drink almond milk, which I think is fine, as long as there's no sugar. Coconut milk is good as well (without sugar)
As for alcohol-- I think tequila and vodka is pretty much all you can drink but must be had in moderation. I don't think there were too many wasted cave men out there...lol
When you make smoothies--use ice, fresh fruit and coconut milk...I made smoothies all summer and it was delicious!

    Wednesday's Food blog:

Breakfast: left over bacon frittata that I made the day before from everyday paleo.com, black coffee

Lunch: Left overs: 1/2 grilled chicken and mashed cauliflower, 1 apple

Post WOD- coffee protein from John A! YUM! thank you!

Dinner: I HAD PALEO CHILI TOO!!
    1 apple

    late night- almonds.

I kinda agree with Camey-- I think I may not be eating enough?? But I feel like I'm always eating at the same time...so I dunno...

CONGRATS TO RAE FOR MEMBER OF THE MONTH!

Is anyone pregaming before the Halloween party???

  3. @Kelsey...I am glad I am not the only one wondering about drink options:) I am on my fourth cup of unsweetened tea already and it is not even noon:( Something has to change!

Don't give in to the comfort food! You will feel terrible later. Besides, save that cheat to cheat big on Saturday!

I also started using livestrong this week. I am still getting the hang of it, but it seems like a very user friendly site. I'm sure it will be very helpful.

@Camey and Kelsey...do you have to pay for the option of knowing how many calories you should intake daily to lose a certain amount of weight on the website?

  4. Tequila!

Tequila w/ soda water, splash of lime juice and some cut up limes.

    Paleo Margarita!

Bryce also mentioned vodka sodas, vodka water, or just straight up vodka (flavored are alright too I hear). I'm not a huge fan of most of those... or tequila for that matter.

Pretty sure I put in a few hundred more cal's yesterday...

Still feel like I'm doing pretty well on the carb intake during the week though, which is what I've been keeping up FitDay for anyways.

  5. Oh I forgot - for regular drinks, I usually just chug a ton of water or make a giant batch of iced tea. I can never get enough of that stuff.

Here's a good read on the booze, if you're interested:

  6. Vodka Soda! I've actually gotten used to these and have grown to like them. I also branched off to drinking soda water/Perrier water.

Also just for the record, I seriously did not know that there was a West loop paleo group until I saw it written on the board yesterday. Thank God, because I'm in day 16 of the Paleo challenge and have kinda been by myself since the LP Crossfit had their own teams/I rarely go up there.

I've been writing everything in my Paleo challenge notebook though.

  7. Thanks for the great input everyone! I'm going to be wasted every day now. lololol. And welcome to the group Dayo!

@Kristine...I looove smoothies, but I always made them with yogurt, fruit, and light V8 juice. I am so happy you have given me an alternative! BTW, aren't those shakes of John's the BEST!? I ordered some and should be getting it in a few days:)

Looking at my menu, it also doesn't seem like I am eating enough, but I am just not as hungry as I used to be. lol. This is shocking.

As far as pre-gaming goes, I was going to go over Alex's house at about 8pm and roll out from there. Does anyone have any post party plans since it ends so early?

@John, those Paleo margaritas sound delish...I think that will be my drink of choice Saturday:)

  8. @Yatta...Love the article. I hear you about the drinks. Water and tea can get a little old with such a big diet change, and conflicting info on drinks while paleo abound.

Like others have suggested, I was told that the purer the alcohol the better. Organic wines seem to be ok too.

Apparently, animals and paleo folks back in the day used to drink fermented fruit whenever they could get it. In fact, many indigenous cultures still drink large quantities of fermented beverages all the time. It provides them with beneficial stomach bacteria. Now, I'm not talking about distilled liquor, but stuff that kinda resembles a strong Kombucha.

With all the reading and advice I've been given on alcohol, the common thought seems to be it's fine in moderation. The article John posted sums things up pretty well.

Regarding other drinks, I've been introduced to a few that change things up a bit for me. I buy loose leaf stevia from Mountain Rose Herbs and add it to lemon and water. Tastes like lemondade, no calories, and true stevia leaf actually lowers blood sugar. You can get it powedered too. It's green and a bit different than the stuff you get at the store.

I'll also have a can of Zevia every now and then. It's a "healthy" paleo friendly soda with 10-14 carbs in it. It's nice when you really need something. It comes in great flavors like cola, Dr. Zevia, Orange, etc. . . You can get it from Whole Paycheck.

Regarding coconut milk, most paleo pundits give it the big thumbs up. Coconut milk is the unofficial paleo beverage/condiment/baking helper of choice. It's high in beneficial saturated fat so a lot of folks go nuts on it, and use it in everything. Almond milk, not so much unless you make it yourself which is very easy to do with a nut milk bag and a blender. Both are really tasty in smoothies. A cheap quick way of making almond milk is to use almond butter. You don't need a nut milk bag then.

One other great drink that I've learned to make that is extremely paleo friendly is chocolate "milk". Cacao powder, stevia, almond milk, a little coconut milk. YUM!

  10. 10/27/10 Food Log:

2 Scrambled Eggs (1 egg white, 1 yolk)
    Sausage patty
    1/2 caff black coffee

    Banana

    Grilled Chicken, cauliflower & broccoli

Balance Bar (I ordered the Lara bars though!)

    Paleo Chili Mmmmmmmmmm

I am definitely not eating enough and need to work on that. If you are strict Paleo, they say you technically cannot overeat however you want to make sure you are not eating too much fruit as its sugar content is obviously high.

As far as non-alcoholic beverages, there are ways to make water more interesting: Coconut Water, Fresh Lime Juice, the soaking of berries is also pretty tasty.

I am not as strict with alcoholic drinks - I figure if I am indulging, I want to enjoy. Clear tequilla is my fav!

  11. PS: Thanks for the congrats - I was totally caught off guard as you can probably tell but truly honored. I LOVE working out with y'all and have LOVED getting to know you more and more!

  12. first off, Rae,...your awesome. nuff said.

second, I tried one of the Naked protein drinks I mentioned in previous comments. delicious. but be careful, lots of sugar and carbs since lots o fruit. so, while it does have 32g of protein per bottle, no added sugar (all sugar is found naturally in the fruit), uses whey and soy protein and coconut milk, one must watch the rest of their intake for the remainder of the day; especially, if you are like me and cant seem to cut your fruit consumption down to begin with.

  13. Tom: whats wrong with a regular powdered whey shake post-wod? It's sooo much cheaper in the long run, easy to mix with water, and loaded with amino acids:

Amount Per Serving: 1 rounded scoop
    Calories 130
    Calories From Fat 15
    % Daily Value*
    Total Fat 1.5g 2%
    Saturated Fat 0.5g 3%
    Trans Fat 0g
    Cholesterol 30mg 10%
    Sodium 100mg 4%
    Total Carbohydrate 4g 1%
    Sugars 1g
    Protein 24g

I'm actually considering some Waxy Maize (carb source) in post-wod shakes... but I'm going to ask around first before I start doing that.

  16. @Tom, I agree with what John was saying. Those Naked drinks are super expensive in the long run and are very sugary when compared to a mix whey. I often use Body Fortress whey mixes. It has about same amount as what John typed out per scoop but a little more protein and added BCAA's. Usually vanilla with a little nut butter does the trick if the shake alone becomes blah.

  17. excited for your pregame Alex!

  18. thanks for the advice doods. i have heard of others doing the same of whey+almond butter+water/coconut milk...sounds delicious. already started looking into the ON coffee flavor.

6am WOD tomorrow, here i come!

  19. I'm interested in these protein mixes too! Are there any without whey? I'm allergic to whey.

  20. @Tom...the ON coffee is so yummy! I just ordered the double rich chocolate.

@Kristine...I am super excited for the pre-game too! Saturday is going to be so fun:)

  21. @ Wendy, I'm no nutritionist or paleo expert but I wonder if a Soy protein powder would work for you instead of Whey due to your allergies. Might need to hit the Google search button for that one :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Dayo...Thanks so much for the suggestion! Unfortunately, I've been banned from soy from my nutritionist. Apparently, it's too estrogen forming, and I'm cleaning my system from years of soy due to being a vegan. I know, I know. . . I got some issues! LOL!

Right now I take a vegan brown rice protein, but that coffee one sounded so good I was hoping there may be one without whey.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Wendy: forgive me if I'm being dense here, as I don't entirely know what vegans can and cant eat and how strict you are, but can/do you have eggs? There are 100% egg proteins out there that are apparently great.

For the record, I have never had an egg in my life (seriously, cooked in stuff yeah, but never straight up) and probably wouldn't touch the stuff. I hear good things though :)
