Bears win!

Gotta love the Bears win and the programming at the box today!

Any of you play sports at all? If so, have you noticed any improvement since crossfitting? I've been skateboarding for a little over 13 years now and it's crazy how much more stamina I have, not to mention all around strength. I feel like the training as a whole has fed into many parts of my life, but this was just something that stuck out to me. Is there anything that you've seen drastic changes in since starting?

  1. actually... i still play soccer in men's leagues around the city and i noticed some improvements there but distance never had been my problem.

more so, though, during the fast-track endurance class last nite, we did a baseline 2K row. rowing is high on my suck list because my legs are not that strong (to go along with everything else that is not that strong). Yet, last nites 2K row was cake. afterwards, i was not even drained, telling me two things:

    1. my stamina has increased greatly.
    2. i shoulda went harder. with the increase in stamina, i now need to "re-figure" (not even a word, but run with me here...) out how to pace myself in workouts while still staying in that oh-so-important "red-zone" (fitting with the bears post). my previous pace will not cut it and i have been compensating for pace with heavier weight as of late in the crossfit workouts. so, this endurance workout was really my first pure WOD where pacing played a role.

  2. While I do not play a sport I do often run in my free time. I have noticed that I do not get winded as quickly as I used to. Also, whereas before CF if I missed a couple of days of running I would fall behind on my time and distance, now it doesn't really matter. I can miss 3 days of running and still run just as far and fast:)

    QUESTIONs:

The pig in me wonders if I can occasionally drink a protein shake as a snack? Fat I know, but I really love my protein shakes. lol. I am thinking about heating the chocolate one up and pretending it is hot cocoa. lol.

Also, I am concerned that without dairy products I am not getting enough calcium in my diet. Do you guys think this is true and if so what are you doing to get your calcium? Any overall vitamin recommendations? All I take now is a One A Day energy.

    Thanks bunches!

  3. @yatta, two things. i dont deal with protein shakes much, except that i use them as snacks. a nice 400 calorie snack. delicious. as for heating it up...depends on the actual make-up of the protein in your powder, it may be heat labile. therefore, heating it up would make it less than 100% effective, possibly.

as for calcium, zack at LP gave me good advice. see below:

Calcium is going to be low for everyone switching to this diet, though it may not be as big an issue. From what I've read, Calcium is depleated from the body (bones) when the body is in a Net Acid state to bring it back to center, which the S.A.D. (standard american diet) is, whereas the Paleo diet promotes a more Alkaline state therefore less calcium depletion. Also, part of the effect of the anti-nutrients from grains and legumes we talk about is to hinder the absorption of cal, mag and zinc. So, by removing these, you're able to better utilize what you are eating.

Here is one article that gets into some of these issues as well as a broader comparison of the paloe deit to modern diets.

Also the FAQ's on the same site is a good place for some additional background.

  4. @Yatta - aren't you using the ON Whey? I don't see a problem at all with having them as snacks - I mean, it's never going to replace actual whole foods, but it is definitely better than nothing or eating crap. I do it all the time.

Can't say anything about heating it up though... I've heard people mix it in with oatmeal and it's pretty good, so maybe?

  5. I was an avid Bikram Yogi, but haven't gone for a good 6 months. Was going to try a class tomorrow. I look forward to see how strong I feel during a session.

@Yatta. . . just my two cents, I'm not a doc or a nutritionist, but I've been given advice by both and they said the best way to get calcium is through green leafy veggies. I guess it's a far better source than dairy. They also agree with with Tom shared. By eating this way we actually need less dietary calcium.

    Today's Food:
AM: 1 hard boiled egg, 2 very small chicken wings, 1oz guac, 1tbsp macadamia nut oil

PM: 4oz grass fed beef, 1c broccoli, 1tbsp butter

Snack: 2 pieces 85% dark chocolate

3c herbal tea w/1 tbsp coconut oil added

  6. Thanks Thom, John, and Wendy for the great advice! And yes, I am using the ON Whey. I look forward to drinking it so much after a workout. Good to know if I am really starving that I can drink one even if I did not just work out:)

The whole calcium thing was concerning me because I was hearing a lot of stuff regarding women having until they were 30 to get their bones in order or some crap before serious risk of osteoporosis. I just wanted to make sure I am on top of it. Thanks again everyone!!

  7. The last couple of years I haven't been involved in any competitive sports. Kickball, flag football and vollyball occasionally. Mostly I was a runner. I started long distances about two years ago and worked down to a 10 min mile. I ran my first race, the Solder Field 10 mile and had to run/walk the race. I hated it. Then signed up for shorter distances. The Nike Women's race which was a 10K and some other 5K. I loved both races and ran the full distance. Still at about 10 min miles. Since starting CF and Endurance, I pretty much have stopped running on my own. On my days off, I don't want to do anything. So when I ran the Urbanathalon, I was thinking I was going to run about the same. I actually ran the first 2 miles at 8 min miles and the last 1.25 was prob really close. I was so surprised that I was able to do that without all the extra running on my own. It just goes to show that the CF and Endurance has made me a well rounded athlete. :) I will leave the skateboarding to you though John. I would seriously injure myself.

  8. I think it is ok to cheat occasionally. Otherwise you will drive yourself crazy. Go for it! And I want details!

  9. LOL @this intervention! As I have told yall before I think it is okay to have the occasional cheat day otherwise you will go nuts. I have not had a true cheat day since Halloween, however I did SMASH about 3 pieces of Drywall's effing fudge. It was delicious. I think I am having a mini cheat day tomorrow during the Festival of Lights. I would really like some hot cocoa and maybe a rice krispy treat while I enjoy the festivities. So Kels, I am with Camey and I think it is okay, just don't go overboard like Halloweeen:)

  10. Sorry for the late post - I have started my STAYcation and decided against checking my blackberry, email, internet, etc. from Friday through right now.

    1. YAY BEARS! Anyone interested in heading to Detroit for the Bears game?!
    2. Cheating: See if you can hold off cheating until Thanksgiving - that's what I am trying to do and so far the temptations I have been able to say "NO" to have made me feel good about myself.
    3. Sports: I have been dying for like 4 years now to play softball, soccer (indoor/outdoor) anything that is a team sport - for fun. While that has not worked out, I do still take a ballet class every other weekend. It's hard to say if my stamina is better, but I can say I have had several compliments on my thigh muscles and my bi-tri-ceps! That has been nice!
